“Inspire others to live their lives knowing that they have purpose in the world”
My personal lead statement is what I live my life by. Volunteering and getting accepted into the Central Michigan University Leadership Institute’s Leadership Safari program, gave me the opportunity to prove to myself that I was doing what I was meant to.
I knew that my experience with Leadership Safari 2018 was going to be positive right off the bat because of the support system I had around me in my core group. Being in the Charlie Brown core group was the perfect place for me and the other members never let
me or any of us forget that. Our meetings and debriefs were filled with reinforcement, positivity, laughter, tears and open arms and hearts. We constantly use efficient forms of communication and were never afraid to ask one another for help. If someone had a bad day or something go wrong, each one of us were there and ready to jump in and try to help as best as we could. Each of us had a role to play in the success of each other’s experience and we held together tightly but enjoyed every moment of it.
Now the hard part was taking on 10 incoming 1st year students of completely different backgrounds which was very intimidating but I’d like to say that I am very grateful. I had such a diverse group of students and it made our experience together even more beneficial than I could have ever imagined. Our conversations had more than just two sides. Our activities were concurred using all forms of different leadership styles. Our inside jokes stem from each personality. Our experience together went form quiet and reserved to talking about things that were needed to be talked about and expressed in a semi-serious and controlled manner. These 10 individuals challenged me to find ways to make them all feel equally important and that their voices mattered in every discussion. I like to think that I was able to accomplish that. I like to think that I was able to leave a positive mark on each of the them and I try my best to keep in touch with them and how they are all doing . I pay attention to the things they post and reach out if I think they are in need or if they reach out I drop what I am doing to make sure that they are okay. They may think that I changed their lives and helped them find purpose, but I know for a fact that it is the opposite way around. My life was changed the second they all walked into my life and they have given me more purpose in this life.
Leadership Safari is a program that every single incoming first year or transfer student should get to experience. If you are an incoming CMU student and want to bond with students who are in the same boat as you by going through numerous bonding activities and self evaluating experiences, then I strongly encourage you to click here to read about my experience as a participant click here to see what we do and then here to sign up.
